oh my. You guys that hate dave are just jealous little pricks who are too lame to actually listen to his music and try to understand its meaning. he is a lyrical genius and his guitar skills are immaculate. i love his music. i love his voice. i love how deep and full of feeling his lyrics are. basically, i adore him and the whole concept of his band. so, before you knock him - take a minute to listen to him and notice all the good he’s done for charitable organizations. And before you call him unoriginal, notice that there are only so many who are like him cause they ‘imitate’ him. don’t knock them either, imitation IS the best form of flattery.

Hey- I love a challenge! Unfortunately Mandyyyy… you are not much of one:
“oh my. You guys that hate dave are just jealous little pricks who are too lame to actually listen to his music and try to understand its meaning.”
For your information, I am a guitar instructor of 9 years teaching experience with an AA in music, and have had many an unfortunate opportunity to ‘listen’ to his ‘music’ in full detail for purposes of analysis and transcription. The only meaning that I can gather (and you have made this readily apparent- ‘jealous little pricks’? C’mon haven’t you gotten past 6th grade yet?) Is that it is music for non-imaginative human propagators keen on mediocrity. It is clear that his guitar chops have the nutritional equivalent of a Twinkie and the waters of his deep lyrical genius couldn’t fill a bloody thimble. He’s all marketing and no art. C’mon, how many Germans thought Hitler was great at first?!
“he is a lyrical genius and his guitar skills are immaculate.”
This is not entirely your fault here- your lack of listening skills are most likely due to the erosion of your local school systems arts program. I will sum up Dave’s playing thusly:
Badly fretted I-ii-V chord progression with lots of buzz… String mute “chukka chukka”… repeat…
OR
Oddly timed riff… Badly fretted I-ii-V chord progression with lots of buzz… String mute “chukka chukka”… repeat…
Not to mention the fact that the songs all have the same ABCABC structure ad infinitum, ad nauseum. For Matthews, who claims to be a huge fan of Frank Zappa, it is easily surmised that he is more interested in money than being a part of the fluid evolution of art.
“i love his music. i love his voice. i love how deep and full of feeling his lyrics are. basically, i adore him and the whole concept of his band.”
His band is actually a set of great jazzers. They’d be FAR more interesting if they fired his no chops hokey ass!
Concept?! There is no concept to this band. Please, quit grasping at straws and attempt to make a statement that you can actually back up. Your vague references hold absolutely no bearing on anything and are obviously just an attempt to make this sound like you might have a clue. But you don’t. So, next point…
“ so, before you knock him - take a minute to listen to him and notice all the good he’s done for charitable organizations. And before you call him unoriginal, notice that there are only so many who are like him cause they ‘imitate’ him.”
Your last sentence wouldn’t be acceptable to a remedial Language Arts class. Your cause and effect approach falls short of something a room full of monkeys attempting to write Shakespeare could easily have strung together. Here’s a little tip from me to you… when you’re coming up with your sentences… HAVE A POINT! It makes it so much more interesting for the reader!
On another front, lemmings always imitate each other, right before they leap off of the cliff. Good riddance to bad bloody rubbish. Mandyyyy, there is no doubt that you should be joining them soon.
Oh, and anyone who makes that much money, they need to donate to get a good tax break. Or, perhaps it’s a type of compensation for his deep seeded knowledge of his own lack of real artistic and humanistic worth.
“don’t knock them either, imitation IS the best form of flattery.”
Imitation without innovation is to be claimed by the evolutionary detail known as survival of the fittest. But by your inherent lack of attention to obvious details, and utter lack of vocabulary, I wouldn’t expect that you’d know what that is. This imitation of which you speak, is only an effort to cash in on what big corporate media (Clear Channel and Ticket Master for example, who are out to get your money as effectively as any tobacco company) happen to be pushing. These ‘musical’ items and ‘imitations’ are that which appeals to the lowest common denominator. So, Mandyyyy, let me put this into terms that you might understand:
In essence, all they are doing is attempting to polish the same turd over and over. And only a fool would not see that all one would receive from this process is brown hands and a foul stench firmly rooted under the fingernails.
“losers.
mandyyyy”
Once again, let me commend you on your sharp verbal sparring skills and… oh wait… you don’t have any! Mandy… y… y… y? Why? Because, you mow my lawn and pay me a dollar an hour for the privilege. You suck and should be destroyed! Go feel warm and fuzzy in the empty glow of the status quo you contemptible concoction of American Commercial pop art sleaze and Hello Kitty handbags! Save your pesos and maybe you can get a nice life like those you see in the Pepsi ads! Wouldn’t that be great!?
I wave my private parts at your aunties! I fart in your general direction! Now go away, or I will taunt you a second time!

Sun, August 13, 2006 - 5:16 PMPADDY,
RIGHT ON MANDYYY... I AM A LITTLE LATE TO THE DISCUSSION, BUT NOT FOR THE PARTY!!! JUST GOT BACK FROM THE DMB 8/05/06 SHOW IN NYC!!! GREAT STUFF!!! LET ME JUMP IN HERE...
PADDY,
Let me get this straight PADAME... you have an AA in music? (for those of you, that is what you can get from a community college)... and you teach too? What school gives teaching jobs to... oh!!! you must be a "THAT" guy... the one you see a flyer for at tyhe laundrymat... big roller here... and you are one to talk!!! I bet you are a big shot there at band camp right?
Do you teach children too? Do you teach them your less than savory values too? Or, do you let them learn on their own to (without ego) appreciate ALL music simply from a creativity standpoint? IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKE THE EDUCATION SYSTEM SOOO SHITTY... TEACHING YOUR SHITTY VALUES!!!
MAYBE YOU SHOULD FIND SOMETHING MORE CONSTRUCTIVE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME, LIKE GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND GET AN EDUCATION. IT IS PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!!!
BOO YA -

Re: good stuff!
Sun, August 13, 2006 - 7:19 PMDear Haze,
I do believe that some of your ideas may waver on the erroneous. I will do my best to help you along here.
See community college is where you go when you cannot afford someplace else. It is really a matter of economic standing. At a smaller, more affordable college, you can pay for your education while maintaining a full time job. Many people in this country are without adequate means of a high profile education. Does this prospect make any college attendee with an AA unfit for their position? Paramedics are merely ‘certified’, does that make them unable to save a person's life? I should say not!
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs dropped out of college. Without them, we would not be afforded this conversation right now. Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin also fall under this category, as do Woody Allen, David Geffen, Ted Turner, and undoubtedly a slew of other people with whom I may never be fortunate enough to shake hands! But I would not question the ability of any of their expertise if they presented a valid argument in their field! Granted, I do not have celebrity, but this does not mean that I do not know what I am saying. Do you propose to put my abilities to the test? Feel free! I would openly welcome such a fun challenge!
So, yes, I work hard to attain what I can, if that is what you are implying. I have done so for many years and will continue to do so. I make the best of my situation and draw strength from that which is not best in or to me. To quote Henry Rollins, “When life hands you lemons, say ‘YEAH I LIKE LEMONS! WHAT ELSE YA GOT?!’” Deal with it.
By the way, you might want to look into a collegiate venture for yourself, as your 'eye for detail' could use a little focusing. Not to mention that your 'rhetoric' just might benefit from some sprucing.
> Let me get this straight PADAME... you have an
> AA in music? (for those of you, that is what you
> can get from a community college)...
Yes, I have an AA in Music. What is your degree in? How does this relate to our musical discussion here? I feel that it is fantastic that you’re incensed by my words- not that I mean to make you or anyone angry- but I fail to see your passion's point. Is there something in particular in which my analysis is mistaken? Please be specific! We are discussing this in a text format, which does not lend itself to the best of understood intention due to a lack of spoken inflection. (Perhaps we are having a gross misunderstanding here and in another setting would be the best of compatriots.)
And are you trying insult me via a ‘Star Wars’ reference? It doesn't really work. Padame was a rather upstanding representative of character and fortitude, as I understood. Perhaps not relayed to the public as well as Lucas could have done, but I digress... Are you saying that women are weak and inferior? I would certainly hope not. Oh, not that it really matters, but I’m Irish, not female. If this was a jab at my sexuality or something along those lines, 3rd grade is long over, grow up.
>and you
> teach too? What school gives teaching jobs to...
> oh!!! you must be a "THAT" guy... the
> one you see a flyer for at tyhe laundrymat...
Dude! Try spell check! You’ll look a bit more ‘intelligunte’! ; )
> big roller here... and you are one to talk!!! I
> bet you are a big shot there at band camp right?
I am not a big shot anywhere. I never claimed to be. I did claim to give my opinion and analysis based upon 20 years of music studies, some of which were spent studying under graduates of Julliard and Musician’s Institute. I gave this opinion in support of those who do not believe that ‘popular’ is necessarily ‘right’. The person to whom I was replying (and I apologize, Mandy. I was harsh to you.) failed to stress why anyone who didn’t like Dave Matthews was a “jealous little prick”. So I brought this folly to her attention as eloquently as possible.
On another note, I have had a VERY successful run teaching at local music stores in the Chicago area and have released 3 albums that have had some national and international sales. Once again, thanks for noticing!
The Laundromat (the actual spelling of the place name) has not entered into it as of yet. Do you have something against me cleaning my clothes? Or do you propose a dilemma with other people cleaning their clothes? Do you represent some faction of nudist colony? Do you have a severe intolerance for the consumers of chemically enhanced soap? What?
It is here where you should be making a firm statement as what you intend to prove or disprove about what I wrote. Flagrant insults don't lead to anything. You have an issue with a particular point that I made? Pick it and let us discuss! Or are you just looking to have me get upset and hail you in a tapestry of obscenities? Alas, that is not a track I ride, my friend.
> Do you teach children too? Do you teach them
> your less than savory values too? Or, do you let
> them learn on their own to (without ego)
> appreciate ALL music simply from a creativity
> standpoint?
I teach all ages, all styles, all levels. Thanks for asking! I teach basics, theory, sight-reading, improvisation, classical, jazz, contemporary, and try to work in whatever happens to be of particular interest to the student. What they do is up to them. What my opinion is, I am welcome to, as are you. While I defend my point, it would never be my wish for all to have the same view point (something the large music corporations seem so diligent in pursuing). As you see, I have at least you thinking! So what I am saying is having an impact!
>IT IS PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT MAKE THE
> EDUCATION SYSTEM SOOO SHITTY... TEACHING YOUR
> SHITTY VALUES!!!
(FYI- Two things: one is a dictionary, the other is a thesaurus. You should try these out, even if just for kicks, and perhaps boost your vocabulary skills. Just a friendly suggestion!)
And it isn't “people like me”. I have worked with kids and adults who had no hope, no friends, no want of wonder for life and I aided in them in finding a path for themselves. Perhaps the path will change, but that is up to them. I work to instill the warmth of possibility in people. And this, once again just in my humble opinion, is the job of any educator. Alas sir, I shall have to call you out on this matter- What have you done to make a difference in the world?
Frank Zappa summed the current state of affairs in our country thus, "Stupidity has a certain charm, ignorance does not." Sadly, I fear that you are in danger of falling into the latter. You've bought into the 'us' versus 'them' mentality. Be the change that you would like to see! I am willing to wager that you are far more capable than you are trying! Be a beacon of light, not a cauldron of hatred.
> MAYBE YOU SHOULD FIND SOMETHING MORE
> CONSTRUCTIVE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME, LIKE GO BACK
> TO SCHOOL AND GET AN EDUCATION. IT IS PRETTY
> OBVIOUS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!!!
>
> BOO YA
And "BOO YA" is the sure sign of a Harvard Graduate?
I am afraid that I fail to see any true point in your dialectic here and just avail myself of the notion that we will agree to disagree.
Have a great day! ‘Boo Ya’ indeed!

Re: good stuff!
Fri, September 1, 2006 - 1:09 AMI’m a former fan of Matthews’ who thinks you’re coming off sounding awfully pretentious. I’ve been playing guitar my entire life, and what impressed me about Matthews was his ability to make original music that was able to appeal to a wide-range of people. Honestly, one of music’s biggest problems are elites who consider their opinion on something as subjective as music superior to everyone else’s. These people often lose sight of how important it is to remember that there is a lot more to music than technical musicianship. What sucks about Dave Matthews is that he’s unsuccessfully trying to impress people like you rather than people like Mandy, and his music is suffering.
Growing up, four of my favorite musicians were Dave Matthews, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, and Jar Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo). What’s frustrating is that each of these guy’s music has suffered for what I believe is the same reason. What sucks about Matthews is that his music became directed at impressing people who previously criticized him for being a southern “fraternity house” band. Rolling Stone Magazine, a group of a self-appointed musical geniuses, have given him continuously improving reviews for his last four albums. The same thing goes for Uncle Tupelo (RS bashed the band’s first two great albums before finally jumping on the bandwagon giving five stars to an album bad enough to break up the band). Moreover, Steve Earle’s great work was completely ignored by elites until giving great reviews the astonishingly mediocre “Greenwich friendly” music he’s released in recent years.
Therefore, bands can really go downhill when playing for critics rather than fans. -

Re: good stuff!
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 9:32 AMJust searching through some things on this site and came across these blogs. First, why does everybody correlate DMB with fraternaties and sororities??? Does anybody know how dynamic and eccentic his background and childhood was? Can he control who listens to his music? By your train of thought the Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pearl Jam, etc. are all terrible bands. Do you believe they are terrible because they are now popular and dont relate to your outcast selves? As far as Dave's guitar playing goes, he is the best rythm guitarist out there. I don't need to hear some moron with an AA in music tell me different. Anytime you want to come jam, I live in South Florida and would like to show you a thing or two. Granted his music has slipped a little, but give me an example of a band who put out their best stuff on their tenth album...it does not happen!
What Brad wrote previous to this is pretty accurate. I just don't want to hear people saying negative things about artists who are original and have changed music. I don't want to hear your enlightening words on Dave's talents because you teach music at some chop shop. I dont claim to critique Michael Jordans jump shot because I played varsity basketball and now coach 4th graders on the weekends. Moron. The only thing "mainstream" about Dave is his following, I live in South Florida the "mainstream" capital of the world it seems and have heard him on the radio maybe three times in seven years of being here.
But if hating makes you feel different and eccentric...go ahead. I too like to find bands when they are coming up and then dont listen to them anymore when they become popular. At least I dont go to some web page to slam them when they do. Lastly, please feel free to name some of the bands that you like so I can gladly point out negative things about them to show how fucking annoying you people are. -

DMB fans always seemed like people who weren't extreme enough to like Phish. And Phish fans were/are either too young or too mainstream to like the Grateful Dead.
Hardcore Daead fans are really really not pleasant, but I admire their willingness to continually show up, selling vegan burritos out of their vans.
Phish fans...they sold hacky sacks out of their vans.
DMB fans eat vegan burritos in their Nissan Xterras and play hacky sack with their stupid white friends.
WOOHOO!!!!
And please don't quote Rollins to defend your musical tastes, especially if your muscial tastes are as pedestrian as DMB.

Re: good stuff!
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 8:58 PMIm just replying to all these posts. Most of you hate Dave Matthews but thats ok but why do you waist your time on here slamming him. I understand that you don't like his music but don't try and tell me he has no talent. I go to UNC and im not trying to sound like a spiffy person because of it but i did go to the head of music because im doing a project on this stuff and i tool elenas post with me and he kind of said that you have no idea what you are talking about. Anyways I don't think any of you guys get it, by getting it i mean his music. Yea im a college student and i play sports and that fact right there has probably takn all credit from what im saying. You just don't get why we like his music just like how most people don't get death metal and hardcore and screamo and all that stuff. But you never hear me talk shit bout them. And i just don't understand how you could waist you life away on here posting all this stuff. Thats another thing in which you guys dont understand about us college kids were not all dumbfucks and us frat kids are not dumbfucks either and most of the guys i know we dont pick on or even mess with gothes or other people we let em party with us and i think thats on of the biggest things here you think you know all this stuff but you really know nothing and i just have to say it must suck to be you guys or some of you cause idk who picked on you but you guys bitch all the time, ya know who care just let shit be have a good fuckin time and live your fucking life thats the way us kids or whatever you want to call us live our lives and if you can't stand it well fuck off and if your goin to waste you time tearing this post apart well your out of luck because unlike you guys i really just don't give a fuck but whatever. You all say its sade that we say all these things but whats really sad is just basically you guys. so later
